A 30-second short animation created in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation at Texas A&M University during the course of 10 weeks over the summer in 2012.

Worked as Surfacing and Lighting Lead in a team of four other people. Each member of the team was expected to touch every area of the pipeline. As a lead, I was responsible for delegating tasks to my members and maintaining the level of quality in the work done for surfacing and lighting.

  • Gathered reference images and created environment & character look boards.
  • Created look development light rig for team members to use for surfacing.
  • Created a procedural metal material that was used and modified for other metal surfaces.
  • Surfaced the terrarium, bear, lamp, walls, pipes, stools, paper & posters, gears, toy bear, and light bulb. Cleaned and optimized textures for all other models.
  • Painted two concept art pieces for lighting reference.
  • Created lighting rigs for team members to import and use within the shot that they are assigned to light. Personally lit shots 1, 4, 6, and 8 out of a total of 9 shots.
  • Rendered shots I was responsible for and composited them using Houdini.
  • Set up, lit, rendered, and composited the credit sequence.

Other responsibilities:

  • Created storyboard and animatic.
  • Modeled major assets including the terrarium, gummy bear, lamp, light bulb, and toy bear. Fixed, cleaned, and UV unwrapped all other models.
  • Did the rough animation for shots 2 and 8.

Software used: Maya, Photoshop, Renderman, slim, and Houdini

  • Maintained spreadsheet to keep track of progress.
  • Delegated tasks and shots to other lighters on the team.
  • Created lighting key paintovers for shots 25 and 32.
  • Personally lit and rendered shots 1, 11, 14, 25, 27, and 35 out of a total of 29 shots.

Software used: Maya, Photoshop, Renderman, slim, and Houdini.
